Level II and III Courses

Access Energy involves gentle touch contact applied to the head, feet and hands, and interfaces with the subtle electromagnetic field of the mental body. Each session effectively clears the electrical charge held around past experiences and current limiting beliefs. Sessions generate a state of mental east and clarity, coupled with deep physical relaxation and enhanced vitality.

Aromatherapy Presents an overview of the therapeutic and empowering properties of essential oils. Students learn which oils are best for massage, how to choose oils and how to prepare therapeutic blends.

Barefoot offers protocols for deeply working the major muscle groups using the therapist's feet. The technique is especially suitable for physically active people, athletes and bodies that require sufficient force to effectively release core muscular tension. The method is a lifesaver for hands, wrists and shoulders that tend to become overworked using traditional massage techniques. Barefoot is an excellent bodywork protocol for post event sessions with athletes. The work is also applicable for basically healthy people who want an overall deep tissue release.

Business Skills and Role Playing and Boundaries Explores challenges that have arisen in the practice of local therapists and attending students. Students will be called to role-play asserting boundaries and negotiate client therapist relationship.

Craniosacral Therapy SBBTI's Craniosacral series is based on the biodynamic model of the subtle, rhythmic movement that occurs within the skeletal system as the cerebrospinal fluid circulates from the 4th ventricle of the brain through the cranium, spinal chord and sacrum. The cranial wave includes: the craniosacral impulse, the mid-tides & long-tides. The craniosacral impulse comprises the flexion and extension of the craniosacral system that occurs 6-12 times per minute. The mid-tide and long-tide rhythms are slower, one to two minute cycles, within the craniosacral system, that arise as the client accesses deeper states of parasympathetic activation. As balance occurs within the cranial wave clients often experience relief from core issues as well as the superficial symptoms of pain and malaise. In Craniosacral Therapy I students learn to monitor the cranial wave and provide a fulcrum for rebalancing the rhythmic movement of the sacrum, occiput and sphenoid.

Deep Tissue offers a broad range of deep tissue modalities for addressing myofascial dysfunction and pain. The track integrates Trigger Point, Muscle Stripping, Positional Release, Deep Transverse Friction, Compression, PNF stretches, post-isometric stretches and palpatory anatomy. Deep Tissue is effective for improving postural alignment, increasing range of motion, breaking up adhesions caused by micro-scarring, injury or surgery, activating connective tissue regeneration, and addressing myofascial pain. Trigger Point therapy involves direct pressure on areas of hyperirritability in soft tissue that develop when a muscle is injured or overworked. Muscle Stripping involves slow gliding strokes in the direction of the muscle fibers. Positional Release involves shortening muscles of contraction by moving its related joint into a flexed position and holding for 90 seconds or until the muscle releases. Deep Transverse friction involves back and forth pressure across deep tissue fibers for the purpose of breaking up scar tissue, releasing adhesions and speeding tissue repair. PNF and post isometric stretches involve slow stretches applied by therapist with active resistance by client for increasing flexibility and releasing contraction in the muscle. Palpatory anatomy hones students’ palpation and location skills in finding the major bony landmarks, muscles, ligaments, and their attachment sites on the body. Students may choose to study the track in its entirety or enroll in the following individual modules based on body areas. Each module includes classroom and clinic hours.

Ethics Clarifies interpersonal issues surrounding the practice of professional massage. Issues surrounding sex, money, power and spiritual longing will be explored, within the context of the massage practice. Students learn to define their own personal ethics while understanding industry standards.

Immune Physiology Addresses the body’s immune system response and the interplay of the various systems. The course addresses a range of imbalances, an overview of toxicology and environmental factors that may suppress the immune system, as well as chemical toxicity, heavy metal exposure and chi depletion from a variety of stressors. Offers Medical Chi Gong practices for mental clarity and immune system enhancement.

Lymphatic Drainage offers gentle bodywork techniques and theory for safely detoxifying the peripheral lymphatics of the extremities and deep lymphatics of the abdomen and vital organs. Our approach integrates light pulsing pressure, Five Element Theory, acupressure balances and subtle listening skills. The lymphatics are an intricate waterway system that flow steadily throughout the body, cleansing and purifying the blood. Students learn how to tune into this fluid environment, and slow down their body/mind system with Qigong techniques and exercises. The approach is highly effective with immune system challenges and for inducing deep states of relaxation. The course includes classroom and clinical component.

Nutrition Presents an overview of whole food healing diets. Some topics covered in this course are:

  • How to plan and prepare health-building diets, drawing on five element principles
  • Balance the intra-cellular and extra-cellular Ph and mineralize the body
  • Provide the body with ample building blocks for the creation of enzymes and hormones
  • Food combining protocols for increasing digestion and assimilation
  • Detoxify the body from environmental toxins, metabolic wastes, parasites, yeast and fungi
  • Draw on their felt sense through the body
pendulum techniques to discern healing foods

Palpatory Anatomy and Clinical Anatomy Thorough knowledge of the musculoskeletal system is a must for all forms of massage. This course integrates a powerful approach to whole brain learning of the musculoskeletal anatomy. Indications of common pathologies will be covered in some detail to keep you and your clients safe. Students palpate muscles and major bony landmarks, assess functions and actions of muscles, understand muscle physiology and utilize applied anatomy to distinguish individual muscles.

Polarity Therapy Presents an introduction to Polarity Therapy. Students learn effective techniques for interfacing with the electromagnetic fields and flows of the human body. The course presents assessment and technique protocol for balancing the five elements and three principals as they manifest in the body and within human process, based on the work of Dr. Randolph Stone. Students learn to assess and affect a change in the electromagnetic field through application of the three modes of touch, ranging from very light contact, to stimulating contact to deep penetrating contact. The course offers traditional Polarity Balances, energy exercises and dietary measures. It includes classroom, clinic and lab.

Pregnancy Massage Covers specific Deep Tissue and Swedish techniques for releasing musculoskeletal strain during pregnancy as well as addresses the anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy. The techniques include slow, muscle-sculpting strokes applied in side posture or semi-reclining positioning. Students learn modified supine and side posture positioning, massage techniques specific for each trimester.

Shiatsu offers a full body table protocol that incorporates classic techniques. Shiatsu is a deeply satisfying approach to energizing
the whole body via acupressure, stretches and articulations along the meridian pathways. Shiatsu is traditionally performed on floor mats and students will learn traditional mat-based Shiatsu session. Students will also learn a table-based adaptation integrating the Touch for Health techniques of neurolymphatic and neurovascular balances and cross fiber deep tissue. Both approaches are designed to systematically tonify the functions of the vital organs, balance the meridians and relieve chronic musculoskeletal pain. Students learn to assess and treat a variety of common pathology syndromes. The module includes both classroom and clinic hours.

Reflexology involves distal stimulation to the feet, hands and ears to affect profound physiological changes in vital organs, glands and musculoskeletal system, including blockage of pain and restored function. Auricular Therapy rivals acupuncture in effectiveness. Visceral Manipulation involves direct contact on the organs to release trigger points and fascial restrictions in organs and surrounding tissues. Fascial restrictions surrounding vital organs can inhibit the flow of blood, lymph and energy in the organs as well as the oscillating movement patterns. Muscle Testing allows the practitioner to hone in on organs and glands most in need of attention, using an indicator muscle and contact on the points of the organs and glands.
In addition to session protocols, students will learn to educate their clients in stress management and symptom relief with auricular therapy seeds, reflexology tools, simple breathing methods, and restorative yoga poses. This comprehensive approach to assessment and treatment prepares graduates to facilitate the resolution of many common pathologies and stress response patterns. Students will learn effective protocols for neck and back pain, insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, joint pain, hormone problems, allergies and many other common health problems. The module includes both classroom and clinic hours.

Trigger Point covers how to treat trigger points and injuries. Trigger points are areas of hyperirritability within soft itssue that develop when a muscle is injured or overworked. Trigger points caused by trauma create changes in the tissue's chemical balance, irritating the sensory systems. Trigger points are characterized by local tenderness and referred phenomena, which can include pain, tingling, numbness, burning or itching. Therapists learn direct pressure techniques with fingers, thumbs and tools to alleviate trigger points, as well as cross fiber friction techniques for breaking up scar tissue, releasing adhesions and speeding tissue repair. Includes both classroom and clinic.

Tui Na is an ancient style of Oriental Bodywork Therapy, utilizing traditional Chinese medical theory of the flow of Qi through the meridians as its basic therapeutic orientation. Using rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, as well as a variety of techniques to manipulate and lubricate the joints Tui Na directly affects the flow of energy by holding and pressing the body at acupressure points. Includes techniques to massage the soft tissue, acupressure techniques to directly affect the flow of Qi and manipulation techniques to realign musculoskeletal and ligamentous relationships to establish a more balanced flow of Qi through the system of meridian channels and collaterals, allowing the body the naturally heal itself. Students learn numerous techniques for application and influence on the body’s Qi, muscles and joints, as well as Chinese self massage techniques and exercises to promote balance of their own Qi and body systems.
